products and put a cross sign instead of them. The orthodox find the half-bitten apple logotype anti-Christian and insulting their belief, something that may potentially cause serious problems for Apple's products in the country.
Interfax news-agency reports about "several" cases, where the radical orthodox, including priests, swapped the Apple logo for an image
of the cross, the symbol of Jesus Christ. According to the ultra-radical orthodox activists, the bitten apple symbolizes the original sin of Adam and Eve and is generally anti-Christian. It is unknown whether the radical orthodox consider the logotype as insulting, but it looks like they do.
At present, the Russian parliament is considering a set of laws designed to "to defend citizens' religious feelings and national and spiritual values from blasphemy and insult". Considering the ongoing radical orthodox Christian hysteria in the Russian Federation, which began earlier this year, and the will of authorities to assist the confession that openly supported presidential candidate Vladimir Putin early in 2012, Apple may run into problems in the country. If the laws pass the presidential clan-controlled parliament (which is highly-likely), the ultra-radical orthodox activists may accuse Apple of anti-religious deeds, which may in the worst-case scenario halt sales of Apple products in Russia.
It is interesting to note that Apple's first logo, designed by Ron Wayne, depicted Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. However, the logo was quickly
replaced by Rob Janoff's "bitten" "rainbow Apple" silhuette that was used from late 1976 to 1998. The monochrome "bitten" Apple logo was used from 1998 to 2003, when it was replaced by glass-themed Apple logotype.
It is interesting to note that from 1976 to 2012 no influential Christian organization has accused Apple of anti-Christian propaganda with the bitten apple silhouette.

By Stoyan Zaimov | Christian Post ReporterApple, Inc.Christians from Russia's Orthodox community are demanding that the country's Apple division remove the famous half-bitten apple logo from its products and replace it with a cross, because they find the apple image offensive to their beliefs.
In popular culture, an apple is often used to represent the fruit that Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge when tempted by the devil, as found in Genesis 3 in the Bible - although the exact type of fruit is not mentioned in Scripture.
Still, conservative Christians in Russia have insisted that the logo should be removed and replaced with a cross, Xbitlabs.com reported from a translated article from Interfax news agency.
The Russian conservatives may get their way and force Apple to change its logo because of new laws being proposed in the country's parliament on blasphemy and insults targeting religious, spiritual, or national values. It is expected that President Vladimir Putin will back the laws, especially since the Russian Orthodox Church heavily supported him during his election campaign in 2012. Besides replacing the logo, conservatives may even stop Apple product sales in Russia if they manage to convict the company of committing anti-religious deeds.
Apple's iconic symbol has been in use in one form or another for over 35 years. The first bitten apple silhouette was introduced in 1976, and has undergone a number of design changes to reach its current glass-themed logo, which was introduced in 2003.
The Russian Orthodox Church has been quick to clamp down on any disrespect or rebellion against its authority. The church was a leading factor in having three members of the punk rock band Pussy Riot jailed for performing a song against President Vladimir Putin inside Moscow's main cathedral. Church officials have called on the all-female group to repent for its blasphemy and hooliganism. -

Why the United States Must Either Get Behind the Anti-Islam Videographer's First Amendment Right to Insult Religion (and Politics and Politicians and Every Other Power, Large or Small), Or Lose What Matters Most
...Accordingly, three years later, in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, the Supreme Court upheld the right of Jehovah's Witness schoolchildren to refuse to salute the American flag or recite the Pledge of Allegiance, because their religious beliefs forbade them to make pledges to symbols - even when the symbol is a treasured national symbol.
Justice Robert Jackson's groundbreaking opinion made this point as eloquently as it has ever been made:
The case is made difficult not because the principles of its decision are obscure but because the flag involved is our own. Nevertheless, we apply the limitations of the Constitution with no fear that freedom to be intellectually and spiritually diverse or even contrary will disintegrate the social organization. To believe that patriotism will not flourish if patriotic ceremonies are voluntary and spontaneous instead of a compulsory routine is to make an unflattering estimate of the appeal of our institutions to free minds. We can have intellectual individualism and the rich cultural diversities that we owe to exceptional minds only at the price of occasional eccentricity and abnormal attitudes. When they are so harmless to others or to the State as those we deal with here, the price is not too great. But freedom to differ is not limited to things that do not matter much. That would be a mere shadow of freedom. The test of its substance is the right to differ as to things that touch the heart of the existing order. If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein. If there are any circumstances which permit an exception, they do not now occur to us.
Note how Jackson ties the First Amendment's absolute protection of belief to diversity. This is a freedom to "be intellectually and spiritually diverse," he writes-which is to say, there is a fundamental right to disagree. The price may be "eccentricity and abnormal attitudes," but that price is worth it. The result is diversity. Though neither the President nor Romney picked up on it, the miracle of American liberty is that we have found a way to encourage religious diversity while preserving the right of every believer (and nonbeliever) to criticize the others' beliefs and conduct. The road to peace is, ironically enough, boisterous and even cruel debate.
Moreover, according to Jackson, writing for the Court, the absolute right to believe what you want, and, therefore, to differ with others, must be strong even when the issues deeply matter, as with issues relating to religion or politics.
Creating an exception to the absolute right to believe what you choose, moreover, would turn this extraordinary liberty into, again in Jackson's words, a "mere shadow of freedom." Republican Gov. Eddie Calvo has drawn the accolades of one Democratic senator -- and the ire of another -- for taking action on nine bills passed by the 31st Guam Legislature last month.
In a move that surprised even the bill's sponsor, Calvo signed into law two bills on sex abuse -- including one that has been opposed publicly by the Catholic Church.
"I'm almost speechless, Governor," said Vice Speaker Benjamin Cruz, who introduced the legislation. "I want to commend you for this very courageous act. I know that it was difficult. I know that there were a lot of pressures that were placed upon you."
Bill 34, now Public Law No. 31-07, opens a two-year window for past victims of child sexual abuse to file civil suit in the Superior Court of Guam. Calvo also signed Bill 33, now Public Law No. 31-06, which eliminates the statute of limitation on sex crimes against those under the age of 18.
The bill came under fire from representatives of the Archdiocese of Agana, who asserted in public testimony that the bill targeted the Catholic Church. Senators also reported that they received phone calls ahead of the vote for the bill from Archbishop Anthony Apuron, who acknowledged that he reached out to senators and the governor to share his view on the legislation.
"I know Bill 34 has been controversial for certain reasons. I do believe it is so important that again, anyone who has committed a heinous act such as a violation of our most precious, our most innocent, that not only criminal remedies should occur, but civil as well," Calvo said moments before he signed the bill.
He said he had been concerned with earlier versions of the bill, which included mentions of institutions as well as individuals. He said he was afraid the mention of institutions could cause bankruptcy for organizations "that as a whole provide services and stability for the communities."
"That would hurt the greater good that these organizations perform," Calvo said.
In a press release issued yesterday, the Archdiocese of Agana said it had "reservations" about Bill 34, but noted that the governor "emphasized in his signing message that public and private institutions are not liable under the new law, and allows litigation against perpetrators alone."TO THE POINT

Q: You and Jeff Anderson are representing two of the victims of former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky in a suit against Sandusky and the university and Second Mile. Have you been involved in any other litigation related to the sexual abuse of children? What is your role in such litigation?
A: Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham contacted me in 2004 to consult with her office on what became its groundbreaking 2005 grand jury report on child sex abuse in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The lengthy report found a pronounced pattern of the archdiocese knowing about abusing priests and callously and recklessly placing them in one position after another with access to children. There was more attention paid to secrecy and reputation than child safety. The report is a landmark in the protection of children, because it laid out the pattern we now see at Penn State, Poly Prep, Horace Mann, the Orthodox Jewish community, Jehovah's Witnesses and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, among others. Cardinal Justin Rigali accused Abraham, who is Jewish, of being anti-Catholic but also pledged to do better.

A new California law makes commercial computer technicians mandatory reporters in cases of child pornography. The bill, AB 1817, was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown this week.
Here is the crux of the bill, according to a press release from the CA K.I.D.S. Coalition:
Commercial computer techicians will now be required to report child sexual abuse images if they discover them during their normal course of work.
The last time this law was updated, it applied to employees in photo and video processing labs. With the dawn of digital media, not only was the old law outdated, but barely scratched the surface of a now-booming digital trade in sexual exploitation images of children.
Had a law like this been in effect in Kansas City, numerous children victimized by Fr. Shawn Ratigan could have been saved from abuse.
Now, if computer techs run across child abuse images (child porn) on a computer, they won't grapple with the questions of "should I? or shouldn't I?"
Hopefully, the word will get out and commercial computer techs will feel safe and empowered to protect kids and report abuse, just like photo lab employees have done in the past.
